Author Challenge #15: Attend a Virtual Networking Event

Expand your professional network by engaging in a virtual networking event. These events provide valuable opportunities to connect with fellow authors, publishing professionals, and potential readers, all from the comfort of your home.

  1. Find an Event: Research upcoming virtual networking events tailored to writers and publishing professionals. Look for events hosted by writing groups, industry conferences, or online platforms like LinkedIn or Meetup.
  2. Prepare Your Introduction: Use the introduction and professional summary you created in Challenge #4: "Create a Speaker's One-Sheet." This concise and engaging summary about yourself and your work will help you make a strong impression. Be sure to include key points such as your genre, current projects, and what you aim to gain from the event.
  3. Update Your Profiles: Refer back to Challenge #1: "Update Your Social Media Profiles & Email Signature." Ensure your profiles reflect your current projects and goals, and include links or relevant information that may be useful during the networking event.
  4. Create a Visual Handout: Use the skills from Challenge #10: "Create an Infographic" to prepare a simple, engaging visual that can be shared digitally. This could be an infographic summarizing your book or a visual that highlights key points of your writing journey, which can serve as a conversation starter.
  5. Engage Authentically: Draw from the sharing techniques in Challenge #8: "Share a Behind-the-Scenes Look" to provide genuine insights into your writing process. Use this as a way to connect with others and share your unique story and experiences.
  6. Follow Up Thoughtfully: After the event, send a personalized follow-up to those you connected with. Reference specific discussions or shared interests to create a more memorable impression and to strengthen your new professional relationships.
  7. Reflect and Apply: After the event, take time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how it can benefit your writing career. Did you gain new insights about the publishing industry? Meet potential collaborators? Note your takeaways and consider how to incorporate them into your upcoming projects or marketing strategies.

Tips for Success

  • Be Authentic: Networking is more effective when you are genuine. Share your story and show genuine interest in others’ journeys.
  • Set Clear Goals: Know what you want to achieve from the event—whether it’s finding a mentor, learning about new trends, or expanding your network.
  • Leverage Your Visuals and Profiles: Having your social media profiles updated and digital visuals ready can provide additional context about your work to new connections.

Why This Challenge Matters

Networking is a vital part of the publishing world. By attending a virtual networking event, you’ll grow your professional circle and apply the skills you’ve honed in previous challenges, enhancing your ability to build meaningful connections and discover new opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Happy writing!
