Author Challenge #17: Join Author Groups and Forums – Connect with Other Writers and Learn from Them

Join Author Groups and Forums: Connect with Other Writers and Learn from Them

Writing can feel like a solo adventure, but it doesn’t have to be! Luckily, there’s a whole world of authors out there—people who share your passion and are ready to swap tips, advice, and maybe even a few memes. This challenge is all about connecting with those communities, whether it’s online or in-person, so you can learn from others, share your experiences, and grow your network.

  1. Pick Your Platform. Finding the right community can make a huge difference. Here are some fantastic groups and forums you can explore:

Goodreads Author Groups (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/53820-goodreads-authors-readers): Goodreads is more than just book recommendations; it’s a thriving community where authors and readers connect. Join author-specific groups to participate in discussions, share your work, and connect with readers. Bonus points if you leave thoughtful comments on others’ books or reviews!

Absolute Write Water Cooler (https://absolutewrite.com/forums/): One of the largest and most established writing forums, with discussions on everything from writing craft to publishing advice. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned author, this forum has a place for you.

Scribophile (https://www.scribophile.com/): A highly interactive platform where you can exchange critiques with other writers. It’s built around the idea that giving feedback earns you the right to receive it, making it a true community-driven experience. Perfect for non-fiction writers looking for focused feedback.

Reddit’s r/writing (https://www.reddit.com/r/writing/): This subreddit is an incredible resource for all things writing. With over 1.8 million members, it’s a place where writers of all levels ask questions, share tips, and occasionally just post memes to keep the writer’s block at bay.

Nonfiction Authors Association (https://nonfictionauthorsassociation.com/): If you’re focused on non-fiction, this is a great place to connect with other authors in your genre. They offer resources on everything from writing to publishing and marketing your book.

  1. Participate Actively

Don’t just scroll through posts! Dive in by introducing yourself, asking questions, or sharing tips with others. And, of course, post your own writing for feedback. Remember Challenge #12: Offer a Sneak Peek? This is the perfect opportunity to test the waters by sharing an excerpt with your newfound writing community. Challenge #15: Attend a Virtual Networking Event will also come in handy here, as many writing communities host virtual meet-ups and webinars. Keep your networking hat on and don’t shy away from asking fellow writers for advice or offering to read their work!

  1. Join Genre-Specific or Goal-Oriented Groups

Tailor your experience by finding communities that align with your goals. The key is to find a space where others understand the specific challenges and triumphs you’re going through. And don’t forget about Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/), which is not just for readers! There are plenty of author-focused groups where you can connect with other writers, discuss your projects, and even build a reader following.

  1. Explore the Write Your Book Skool Community

If you’re focused on non-fiction, entrepreneurship, or building authority through writing, be sure to join our Write Your Book Skool Community (https://www.skool.com/writeyourbook). It’s specifically designed for non-fiction authors, entrepreneurs, and coaches looking to establish credibility, grow their influence, and build their platforms through writing. Whether you're a first-time author or seasoned in publishing, you’ll find a supportive group of like-minded individuals ready to collaborate and cheer you on.

Pro Tip:

If you’re feeling a little shy, start by commenting on posts or responding to others’ questions. Small steps can help you ease into the community, and soon you’ll find yourself trading tips, book recommendations, and perhaps even joining group writing sprints.

Writing communities are your secret weapon. Not only do they offer inspiration when you hit a wall, but they also provide feedback that can elevate your work. From practical tips to a sense of camaraderie, these spaces can turn a solo endeavor into a collaborative adventure. And let's face it—who else but a fellow writer will truly appreciate the agony of picking *the* perfect word for that sentence you’ve rewritten five times?

Joining a group or forum isn’t just about networking—it’s about finding your tribe. Whether you’re looking for feedback, support, or just some good writing banter, these spaces can offer all that and more. Take this challenge as a chance to connect with fellow writers, grow your skills, and maybe even make a few lifelong friends. After all, no one gets the struggle of cutting that precious scene you’ve been holding onto quite like another writer.

Happy writing!
